Sports, Recreation, Fishing & Marinas
Montauk is a perfect place to enjoy a day’s surfing, swimming, hiking, biking, fishing or just sitting back and staring at a great sunset. Here’s a quick list of places to go, things to do and people to help.
Beaches
Montauk beaches are in general welcome to all but parking is heavily restricted. As an example, Ditch Plains is by far the most popular surfing spot on the East End. But park there without a valid East Hampton Town Permit and you will be heavily fined and/or towed away! You will however find free parking in the village at Kirk Park located next to the IGA on the western end of Main Street and in the village itself along the side streets between Main Street and the ocean are largely free, too. Just be sure to check for any 2 hour limits before you hit the beach for the day.
Need facilities to go with your beach day? Drive 4 miles west along the Old Montauk Highway to Hither Hills State Park where you can park for $10 a day and enjoy access to play grounds, picnic areas, rest rooms and a convenience store.
Beach Driving
When you feel the need to cruise the sandy shore remember two things. First: a tried and true, four-wheel drive SUV or truck. And no, Martha, you can’t just drive the old Olds onto the sand and expect anything good to happen. Before you know it you’re hub deep in sand and hollering for help!
Second: make sure you have the right to ride the high-water mark. Whether you live in East Hampton or South you need a permit to drive the public beach. You’ll find them at either the East Hampton Town Clerk’s Office 631-324-4143 or Southampton Town Clerk’s Office 631-287-5740.
